The Unraveling

Duo exhibition with Giorgia Bel

The collection of work for The Unravelling develops a dialogue between the properties of water and relationships to the Body. Taking a metaphoric deep-dive into the influences of movement and place in natural water bodies as they are read through the sensations of the body formed a type of knowledge unique to the artist and her process. Spending time immersed in Creeks, Waterholes, Oceans and Lakes offered inspiration for this collection, inviting new ways to move beyond the edges of the canvas and wander through waters that gently burn, echo and drift on and around the body.

The artists affinity with the affecting properties of water are experienced in the slowing of tempo while aligning to its ebb and flow. The body unknots itself and resets through the repetitions of inhale/ exhale. This is understood to be The Unravelling.

In response to this inherited tempo, the activity of painting occurs in slow contemplative states. Through abstract languages and directed methods of evoking place, Cristallo moves through the nuances and reflections characteristic of each water body.  Whether it’s a drifting, silent echo or a numbing sharp burn, each work weaves together a visualization of experience through colour, mark, shape and line. The resulting work creates its own articulation of observed, felt and described ‘unravelling’.
